Tandem bicycles are popular today for many reasons. For one, cyclists do not have to be of equal strength, ability or endurance to ride. Tandem bicycles transfer energy from both cyclists to propel the bike. Usually, the larger of the two riders should sit up front. This is not a rule which must be followed at all times, but having the bigger or taller rider sit up front often makes both cyclists' jobs easier. When riding a tandem bicycle, each cyclist has his/her own responsibilities which must be met in order for the team to succeed in making the riding experience enjoyable for both riders. The front cyclist, often called the "captain", is responsible for steering, shifting and braking the bike. The rear cyclist, often known as the "stoker", mainly acts as an extra motor and should provide more power to the team when needed, (such as when going uphill). The stoker can even take turns peddling with the captain on flat terrains in order to allow each riders to regain energy.
