Most are multi-speed (24-27 gears), while others are single or 12-speed. The multi-speed bicycles are designed to allow the rider to get the most out of his/her energy by selecting the most efficient gear ratio. For example, lower gears are most often used for going uphill, while higher gears are selected for going downhill or while traveling at high rates of speed. Single-speed bikes are most often used by cyclists who prefer a less-sophisticated, more relaxed riding experience. Often, these are fixed-gear bicycles, which means that while the bike is moving, the pedals will turn. In contrast, free-wheel bicycles allow for the pedals to remain still while the bicycle is in motion. This allows the rider to keep his/her feet and legs still while the bike is traveling, which helps to conserve energy.
